Come in! Come in…and welcome! Gosh, we have so much to share, where to start? Fabulous authors launching new fics; publishing new books; hitting the complete button…not to mention exciting contests on the horizon… Go, read…this fandom never gets old!
If you’re a fan of Robsmyyummy Cabanaboy (and if not, boy, are you missing out!), I don’t need to tell you the woman’s not afraid to spin an angsty tale. From the Jersey shore to Okinawa to the rolling hills of Tuscany, “Yummy” drags her characters through some of the most painful journeys in fanfic, and we eagerly tag along. Why? Because when Edward and Bella finally do figure it out, it’s all the sweeter for their struggles.
“Far Away Flame” continues her pattern of torturing both characters and readers with a bittersweet series of vivid, push-me-pull-you scenes of two kids who could’ve made things a whole lot easier on themselves by sticking with what they knew in kindergarten: they were MFEO. But sometimes it takes a lifetime of near misses to bring two people together.
FAF brings the reader deep into Bella’s head in first-person, present tense, so her emotions are painfully real. From early scenes of hand-holding and innocent declarations, we’re treated to a budding on-again, (mostly) off-again pairing that twists and turns through puberty, the jealousies of high school, and unavoidable reunions—like her best friend’s wedding (aka “that time Edward’s date went home with Bella’s groomsman):
“Hey, umm.” Not an impressive start, but I figure our shared history has him give me a second glance, though he continues to make his way to his car. “Are you okay?”
I get no response; we just keep moving.
After walking the next three rows in silence, we’re at his car and he slips his key into the lock. “Not really in the mood to talk, sorry.”
“No, it’s fine. I’m just . . .” I shake my head, at a loss. “I apologize for the scene back there.”
Edward shrugs. “No big deal. I’m sure she and I’ll work it out tomorrow.” He laughs it off, but the emptiness in his eyes makes me wonder if he’ll ever hear from her again. Maybe they weren’t serious? “Anyway, I’m sorry she took off with your date.”
“Oh, he really wasn’t my date. Emmett and Rosalie paired us up to walk down the aisle and do the bridal party dance together, that’s it. We only met last night at the rehearsal dinner.”
Edward cocks his head. “You seemed pretty in tune with each other while you were dancing tonight. Figured there was more there.”
I scoff, attempting to play it cool. “We had fun dancing, as I imagine you did with—”
“HA!” He chuckles some more after his outburst but then adds, “Touché. Guess we shouldn’t be judging books and all that.”
I give him a sad smile and scrounge around in my brain to salvage this poor guy’s ego. “Wanna go for coffee or something? I really feel bad about”—I point my thumb over my shoulder—“whatever it is that just went on.”
He shakes his head. “I wouldn’t be very good company right now. Maybe another time?”
Ahh, the thanks but no thanks brush-off. “Sure.”
“Here, let me get your number.” My heart skips a hopeful beat.
And just like the old days, butterflies swarm my gut over this man; my untouchable flame that only ever licked at my skin when I was lucky enough to get close. Somebody get the defibrillator, I’m going down.
Through it all, a steadfast—if not always apparent—friendship survives. Bella tries but never gets over her attraction to that “untouchable flame” that always burns just out of her reach. The paradox of her longing is so beautifully captured a couple of chapters later:
I swallow the lump in my throat, because I wish the universe would just get him away from me forever . . . but the thought of a world without Edward Cullen somewhere in it makes my chest hurt.
We may all need defibrillators for this one, but I have a strong feeling it’ll be worth it.
Summary: Their story plays in her mind like a kaleidoscope of bittersweet moments in time. Years later, when Bella finally finds the courage to go after what she’s always wanted, will it be too late? Rated M ~ Drama/Romance ~ Bella/Edward ~ Work in Progress
When VancouverCanuckGirl came to me over a year ago and said she had an idea for a new story, I was thrilled. When she explained to me it wasn’t going to be a comedy like so much of her work, I was surprised. When she revealed that she was going to tell the story of Edward as a single dad, I was intrigued. When she confided that Edward was going to be a single dad to Isabella…well. I admit. I was dubious, to put it nicely. Maybe he shouldn’t be Isabella’s father, I suggested. Perhaps Rosalie or Alice is who you really want to use. Yes? No. She was adamant. His daughter is definitely Isabella.
So I supported her decision, all the while wondering how the hell this was going to work.
And then I started getting chapters to beta, and all doubts were put to rest. VCG blew me out of the water with the story she was telling. She had a vision for this story, for these characters. She knew exactly the tale she wanted to write, and to say she was dedicated to telling that story- the story of a father’s love- is an understatement.
While she knew the story she wanted to tell, the writing itself did not come easily. There were re-writes upon re-writes. There were months of silence where my inbox sat empty, and VCG struggled to get the words out. Writer’s block, raising her three beautiful children and two adorable puppies, being a wife, and also working outside the home- all of it impeded her time and creativity, but never once did she give up or back down.
When her father was diagnosed with a lung tumor and underwent radiation, she became more determined than ever to see this story through. While Edward’s story is not VCG’s dad’s story, the love and guidance that Edward provides to his daughter throughout the fic is the same love and guidance that VCG’s dad gave her. She’s told me enough stories about him over the past few years, that I know this is true. I know where she learned to write a father who loves his child more than anything and isn’t afraid to show that love. She lived it. By putting her words to paper…er, screen….she’s allowing us- the readers- to live that love, as well.
I hope that people who read fic only for Edward/Bella romance will give this story a chance. Her wicked humor is there, along with a firm understanding of real life parenting. The characters in this story are so vividly drawn, you’ll swear you know them as well as you know your best friend. I’m so extremely proud of her for having the guts to buck canon and write the story she always set out to write.
The story of A Father’s Love.
Summary: A different kind of love story. Rated: M – English – Family – WiP
I very nearly didn’t finish reading the brilliant Ruth Clampett’s newest book, Wet. Actually, I barely survived the first chapter. Quite a bit of time was spent fanning myself with my Kindle *grins*. This book is hot – seriously hot. The chemistry between Paul and Ellie is so tangible you can reach out and touch it.
But for all its heat, Wet is also serious and sweet. Paul is a recovering sex addict and he takes his vow of abstinence very seriously (much to this FicSister’s disappointment) and even though he once lived life in the fast lane, he really is a good man – loves his mother, respects his father deeply…tolerates his siblings *winks*
I’m sure you have all heard the old adage of “these things are sent to try us”, well, I’m positive that Elle was sent purposely to try Paul. She is his ultimate woman, and resisting her is very…hard (sniggers) for Paul, but he does, and what blossoms is a really beautiful friendship that eventually…well, I’ll leave that for you all to discover for yourselves. Because the one thing you should all do right now, is go out and buy this wonderful book. I couldn’t put it down, it made me giggle, got me all flustered, made me cry (both kinds – sad and happy tears) and made my heart swell with joy. It’s just that good.
PS: We have to give a shout-out to Jada D’Lee, who designed the cover – it is inspired, Jada! Loving your work
Hi there, ruinedbyrob, thanks for dropping by… Can you give us the DL on Reflections? We have questions. There are things we neeeeeed to know! *bats lashes*
Bella is adorable, and as the story opens, she’s immediately so easy to identify with as a child, what’s the inspiration behind her character?
I’ve always struggled with my weight. As a chubby adolescent I experienced bullies from elementary through high school. Through this story I relived several of the experiences I had. So, I guess my adolescent self was the inspiration for Bella. I wanted to write a story for anyone who went through the same experiences I did. I also wanted to rewrite history where the gorgeous boy comes to the realization that beauty is truly within, ignores his peers and follows his heart.
Did you know the whole outline beforehand or did Bella and Edward take you on a journey too?
I always knew how I wanted the story to start and end. The middle was a bit of a mystery and my outline only took me about halfway. After that I let the characters guide me. Like most teens, they weren’t always willing to let me in on their plans and had moments where they refused to speak to me, making updating kind of tough.
Edward is just gorgeous as a beautiful, sensitive boy, you captured his desire to be accepted beautifully – the childhood scene of the sneaky ‘treehouse invasion’ springs to mind! …He feels so real where did Edward come from?
I’m not really sure. I don’t have any brothers but I’m very close to my two nephews, Alex and Max. I think a lot of Edward came from watching them grow from rambunctious little boys to self-conscious pre-teens. My beta thinks I must have been channeling my inner boy. I’ll admit that writing Edward came a lot easier to me than writing as a teen girl. I can only assume that since I was a teen girl that POV was still a little painful and writing for Edward was easier.
We have so many readers who thrive on angst – and at the other end of the spectrum, the wusses…how would you rate Refections on the sob-o-meter?
I’m an admitted angst h00r and my initial intent was to write a story that would do to my readers what fics like Emancipation Proclamation, High Anxiety and A Ladder to the Sun did to me. They all had me weeping into my giant pillow! I don’t think I quite achieved a tissue warning or a need for copious amounts of chocolate and wine, but I think a few sniffles are definitely a possibility.
Who is your own favourite character, and why? (Just for info, I would squeeze a certain Aunt very tight if I ever met her!)
Aunt Janet was a tribute to my beta, Mullet86. She’s always there for me with an encouraging word and gentle prodding. Bella needed someone in her corner who wanted to be there. And since her mother was unwilling to be that person, I created one for her. Aunt Janet’s sage advice and unconditional love is exactly what Bella has needed her whole life.
Picking one favorite character is very difficult. I love both of my main characters. But I have to give the title to Emmett. Emmett was an out of nowhere voice of reason when no one expected it and he injected a shot of humor when it was needed the most. I loved when his intelligence and ability to read between the lines put things into perspective for his genius brother. You can’t take Emmett at face value. He’s a lot deeper than he appears. He’s really the kind of character that a writer loves to have. He can say or do almost anything and get away with it.
I also need to give a little love to my Alex and Max characters. They were the perfect tool to force Edward to grow up. They not only helped him repair his relationship with Bella, but also with his brother.
Did you have a proud-mama moment as your characters became adults and chose their paths or were there moments of frustration? …or both? 😉
Bella frustrated the heck out of me. She was so quick to believe the worst and was so hard on herself. Watching her mature and accept herself was wonderful. I think my proudest moments occurred at the Christmas chapter. She showed so much maturity. And then towards the end when she took a leap of faith and laid all of her cards out on the table knowing she might not get what she wanted from him but understanding she couldn’t move on without trying.
I was so proud of Edward when he finally understood that acceptance by the wrong people isn’t worth hurting the right people.
What was the fun bit of writing the story?
I really enjoyed writing the interaction between the brothers and coming up with Emmett’s antics. Edward’s interaction with Alex in the mall is another favorite. I laughed so hard writing that chapter!
How do you feel now it’s completed?
I have very mixed feelings about it being completed. I’m so proud of how far they’ve come but I don’t want to let them go. I feel as if I’m losing two members of my family.
If readers take one thing from the story, what would you hope it would be?
Be yourself, love yourself and don’t waste time on people who can’t or won’t see how amazing you are.
Finally, is there one special moment in the whole fic that you just felt stands out as your ‘oh yeah‘ moment? No spoilers, but just one heart-stopping blissful ‘THIS’…and you nailed it?
Chapter 34, when Edward goes to Bella’s house and sees her through the window. Without a doubt that was my pat myself on the back chapter.
The light finally comes on for him, leaving no doubts as to exactly what he wants and just how much he wants her.
Thanks so much to ruinedbyrob for joining us today, indulging us and sharing herself so openly – what an honour it has been!!
Summary: Mirrors don’t always tell the truth. That’s what Edward would have Bella believe. But when an overheard comment leads her to believe he’s been lying, she runs, leaving behind the only friend she’s ever had. Will perceptions change when she’s forced back to Forks and her supposed best friend or will she allow the past to overshadow any chance she might have for a bright future? Rated M ~ Angst/Romance ~ Bella/Edward – Complete
This story first came on my radar on August 26th, when SunflowerFran recommended it in her Facebook group, Pay It Forward. It was only three chapters in and I was hooked from the first word. In my review of one of the subsequent chapters I told the author, cynosure23, that I would kill to be pre-reading this story. Thankfully, she obliged without any bloodshed being necessary.
Four Hundred & Twelve starts out with Bella at the bedside of her comatose husband, Ben Cheney, two months after he had a stroke. They have been married around ten years at this point in time, and to Bella, theirs is a wonderful marriage. After Ben’s estranged half-brother, Edward Cullen, comes home to start mending his ties with the Cheney family, she starts to learn that all she knows about her husband, and by extension, Edward, may not be the truth.
Everything that Bella knows about Edward is filtered through Ben’s hatred of and competition with him. Slowly, Edward, along with Ben’s other family members, starts to reveal things about Edward and Ben’s relationship that will rock Bella’s perception of Ben and her marriage to him.
Who we have here is not canon Ben Cheney. While Bella thinks he is a wonderful husband, charismatic and easy to be friends with; what is revealed will destroy everything she thinks she knows about him. He is manipulative and conniving. He is competitive and ruthless. He is deceitful and will stop at nothing to prevent Edward from having anything.
With every chapter, every nugget of information about these relationships that is unearthed, I find myself guessing at what comes next. The fact that my guesses have, so far, been spot on, adds to my excitement. My thirst for more of this story has me fangirling with the best of them.
Join me, won’t you, in watching what seems to be the best of marriages imploding? Come along with me and witness the deconstruction, and (I hope) the eventual reconstruction of a family that has been blinded for too long by the actions of one of its members.
Summary: Day by day, Bella sits at the bed side of her husband. Nothing changes…until her brother in law enters the picture and turns her once perfect life upside down. Rated M ~ Hurt/Comfort/Romance ~ Work in Progress
Sometimes an author kind of sneaks up and onto favourite lists without a reader noticing. Then when a ‘new story’ alert drops in, there’s a certain familiarity and a warm glow… suddenly it’s apparent that each of their stories holds a special place on reading lists; their writing is great…and it’s easy to wonder how the heck aren’t they more widely appreciated! Such is the case with author ifyouweremine.
Her new fic, an absorbing one-shot, A Louder Light, fell into FicSister laps this week, and what a treat it is.
Bella flees an abusive relationship; home to the safety of a father she’s never really known and a place where she’s a stranger. Although she’s quiet, unassuming and unsure, she is also kind and non-judgmental.
So, when she meets a silent, hoody-wearing, brooding man on a walk late one evening, she sees more than the rest of the town – she sees a potential friend. She recognises his hurt and gently their friendship begins…
A beautifully paced story of redemption, courage and second chances, A Louder Light is such a satisfying read that there were actually sighs of contentment throughout the International House of Fan Fic when it was finished!
Give it a read, and remember to leave the author some love – she so deserves it!

“When I first read the original one-shot of The Man Next Door, I immediately fell in love with the story.
