Pull up a chair, get comfortable…the sweetness that is Jane-with-a-y starts us off…
In 2011 my husband took me to a quaint B&B for our anniversary in Charlestown, SC. While there, the seed for a multi-chaptered story began to sprout. I named it The Inn Keeper’s Daughter.
I decided to set it on Cape Cod, Massachusetts which is close to where I grew up. I loved the idea of a place becoming its own character in a fic and Cape Cod certainly had all the right elements; the canal, the bridges, the sea, and the tourism that attracts countless visitors every year. I knew that life in a summer place can be quite isolating for those who inhabit it year long. I wanted to capture both the beauty and the loneliness.
In my first draft, A Crack In The Door was supposed to be Rosalie and Emmett’s story within The Inn Keeper’s Daughter. But one night I had a weird dream that changed everything. In my dream Edward was a rather jaded and lonely bartender. Edward turned to me and stated very clearly that ACITD was HIS and Bella’s story. As soon as I woke up I scratched my original outline and began anew.
This story is about loss, healing and hope. I wanted to craft a story where two people who had suffered terrible tragedies were able to reach out to each other without the outside world looking in. One reader suggested the door was symbolic and was similar to that of a confessional where they bared the depths of their souls to each other.
I listened to a lot of music while writing this story; everything from Linda Ronstadt to the Sex Pistols. I also drank a lot of Dirty Martinis and Cosmopolitans, just for the sake of authenticity.
It’s not easy letting your baby grow up and it’s not easy letting a story go. But I am happy that Edward and Bella found their happiness.
Summary: A lonely bartender and a mysterious girl next door. Who is she? Why does she cry every night? More importantly, why does he care? Together they form a tentative friendship between the crack of the door that separates them; will the crack open wide enough to let love in? A story of loss, healing, intimacy, and hope. Beta: SunFlower Fran Hurt/Comfort/Romance Rated: M Edward & Bella Cape-Cod-ward Complete
Thank you to FicSisters for asking me to do this!
While I consider Inside Out to be my baby, the serious story that I’m very proud of, I think my favorite of my own fics is actually Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happy Endings, which is EPOV of the far more popular Reason for Living.
I’m not really comfortable writing EPOV, but after the RFL readers begged for it, I gave it a shot, rewriting the entire story from his POV. I used an additional male pre-reader to help with the first dozen or so chapters until I got the hang of it, learning more than I ever needed to know about how men pee with a boner.
Overall, I’m really happy with how it turned out. Edward as a character undergoes such a transformation from the beginning of the fic to the end — from a sex-obsessed escaped convict; to falling in love for the first time and trying for once put someone else’s needs before his own; and finally to an acclaimed chef, family man, and later, husband. Ok, so he’s still sex-obsessed, but he wouldn’t be Cheekyward if he wasn’t.
I wish FF.net would’ve allowed me to mark three genres on this fic, because while the storyline itself is full of drama, Edward’s snarky, sarcastic inner monologue peppered with the ‘F’ word adds a lot of humor to lighten the mood. Thankfully, he does have some filter and doesn’t voice most of his thoughts aloud, however. I also love his relationship with Bella’s cat, Leo, such as this interaction after the first time Edward and Bella have sex (and the poor cat is relegated to the living room).
As I turn the TV on, I notice Leo giving me the side-eye from where he’s curled up on the coffee table. “I didn’t hurt your mama,” I assure him. “Those were good screams.”
Though my pre-reader and beta, moosals, disagrees, I always think that I struggle to bring a characters thoughts and emotions to life in my stories, but in this one, Edward’s feelings come through loud and clear. His chapters always ended up longer than the corresponding BPOV chapters… though maybe that’s just from all of the cursing.
Summary: All Edward wanted was his freedom and a safe place to hide… and maybe a warm female body in his bed. What he got was so much more. EPOV of “Reason For Living.” Rated C for Cheekyward. AH, Tattward Romance/Drama/Humor Rated: M Edward & Bella Complete
We’re lucky here at the International House of Fan Fic, although we’re all about
enabling fellow addicts…erm…sharing with other readers, we also have lots of author friends. So, when someone writes a fic flying low under the radar…and it’s a fic that has us gripped, is original, intelligent, well written and we want to find out more…you know we can’t resist sharing with you.
First Blush kindly explained Unto Your Safekeeping to us…
Dr. Isabella Dwyer fears nothing—not even death. She’s a renowned scientist, a visionary, and in three days, her life as she knows it—will cease to exist.
Isabella has been searching for a cure to what ails us all…time and she’s putting her science to the test. She’ll awaken to a world where she is 50 years younger than her gestational age. To anyone seeking the fountain of youth, this is the answer to their prayers. No more gray hair or wrinkles. No more age spots, arthritis or waning libido. On the surface, this seems fantastic, but the greater social question, is where does the change leave this “new” person?
If what defines us is our human experiences–the relationships we build, the interactions with friends, family and loved ones, then were does Isabella fit? Does she fit in with people of her gestational age? Maybe. Her contemporaries are planning their retirement, examining their investment portfolios, talking about health care plans and social security. In turn, does she fit in with those of her new physical age? How can she relate to their interests in music, entertainment, politics or even technology? How does she go from the world treating her as a renowned scientist to another twenty-something who has yet to prove herself? Finally, there’s the biggest question of all…who does she trust with her true self?
Forced to let go of her past, Isabella struggles to forge a new life. The future she envisioned feels untenable. As her hopes wane, she comes to find strength in a rare and unexpected source, a physical therapist named Edward Mason. Edward’s touch, his easygoing manner, and his unwavering belief in her give her the strength to push forward when she would have otherwise given up. She would do anything he ever asked of her with perhaps one exception — telling him the truth.
This one has been under the radar for far too long, join us and find out ALL the answers.
Summary: Unto Your Safekeeping: A doctor searching for a cure. A breakthrough that questions everything. Much can be gained in the battle to extend human life, but at what cost? And for Isabella and the man she longs to trust, one question remains: Is success a medical discovery, or is it the discovery of one’s true self? What lies “Beneath the Scars” of both main characters, in Melanie Moreland’s newest literary venture, is much more than what appears on their surface. And much more than you’d expect in the picturesque seaside town setting. From Megan Greene’s longing to escape a chaotic personal and professional life, to the fantastical paintings of recluse Zachery Adams, who bears a history he buries far below the scars that afflict him physically, it’s all there for the reader to discover and experience.
This smoothly written work, alternating between both points of views, delves deeper and deeper into the characters’ complex lives, as it moves along at an absorbing pace, keeping the reader wanting to know what happens next. The story is both romantic and emotionally gripping with its beautiful, vivid descriptions of the turbulent setting, and will have you living in the moment with Megan and Zachery, as they learn and grow with and from each other. All this, while living on the sandy, stormy New England beach that lies between their coastal homes.
We thoroughly enjoyed “Beneath the Scars” and we are sure you’ll feel the same. Until then, enjoy this tantalizing teaser…
The sound of the ocean, the crash of the waves as they kick up against the sand and rocks—these are the only sounds Megan Greene wants to hear. She wants to leave the rest of the world behind, and find some peace.
The offer of a private house on the beach, set in a small town in Maine, is perfect. Time to think—to be by herself. It’s all she wants. It’s the escape she needs.
Until she stumbles across the painting that seems to echo her own chaotic mindset.
Until she meets the unfriendly artist behind the stormy painting and discovers his secrets.
All Zachary Adams wants is to be left alone. His canvases, and the unending scope of the ocean and sand, are his life. They direct him—fill his hours. Bring him focus.
Until she enters his life.
She dredges up memories of the past—the haunting images he has hidden for years; the fears he has never shared.
A story he keeps buried below the surface.
Can she make him see what he is missing? Can he trust her enough to believe?
Together they embark on a journey where their pasts collide and threaten to tear them apart.
Will their fragile bond hold or wash away with the ebbing tide?
“I know one thing for sure: it all began with a question.
Do you know The Masens?”
I don’t know how to put it any other way. This story WRECKED me! If you are an angst junkie, this is the fic for you. Not by any means for the wusspervs out there.
This fic follows Bella back and forth, from present day as she’s telling the story to her daughter, to flashbacks where we see a little more than I hope she told her daughter at bedtime. Tales of how her mother once became the obsession of the biggest rock star in the 80s. She takes us all on an insane roller coaster ride of emotions where she starts out as a naïve teenager down on her luck and needing a friend.
Enter Edward. Much older and famous to boot. They meet after one of his concerts and rather than it becoming a sordid groupie incident that he could easily forget, he helps her out and gives her a ride home, actually getting to know her in the process. There is a mutual attraction that he refuses to acknowledge due to their age difference, but he can’t deny that they are still drawn to each other. Thus begins a crazy relationship, emphasis on the crazy, of two friends who can’t fight off becoming more than that for long.
There’s always a little bit of the impossible to this story; everything that happens to Bella and Edward is to the Nth degree. The love is LOVE. The steam is STEAM. And eventually the heartache is HOLY FUCK I’M HURTING HEARTACHE. But it makes for an amazing read that keeps you on the edge of your seat. You hate them both at one point or another. You weep for each of them. You just want these crazy idiots to work it out for God’s sake!
And through it all, you really have no idea where it’s going. You think you know, more than once, and you are WRONG. It’s written brilliantly. One thing about being an avid reader and writer, at least for me, is that my mind is guessing ten steps ahead and looking for what’s going to happen. I can’t turn it off and I hate it when I’m right in two seconds. With this fic? I was NEVER right, and I still cared and wanted to know. I had to know. I waited for updates for this fic like I was waiting for a crack dealer. I had to find out what the hell was going to happen.
If you like getting kicked in the gut emotionally, but then coming through it with that feeling you get after a really good cry, then this is the fic for you.

Ever have an author who writes a sentence and you know you’re committed to the whole fic? Yeah? Thimbles, also known as Shell, fits into this category for us. Her words… GAH!
So, when earlier this week she gave us a Bella who made us giggle, we leapt straight back to high school with her. When Bella answered to the wrong name because Edward was being, well…Edward…we all agreed we’d let him call us by any name he chose, too. Adorable, forgetful and very endearing; we’ve kinda lost our hearts to him already.
We asked Shell to share her inspiration for Also Known As…
Words have been coming to me slowly of late, so I decided to use The Twilight 25 as a discipline thing—to force myself to write each day. I tossed around a couple of ideas, and then for some reason my husband and I were talking about this guy we used to know. Mr. Thimbles said, “Remember how he called you Fiona for ages?!”
I don’t know how he got “Fiona” from “Shell,” but even after I’d corrected him a few times, he just kept calling me Fiona. As soon as the Mr. brought it up, I had this outline unfolding in my mind.
There are 25 prompts and I have until Nov 30. Hopefully I can squeeze out a fun story within those limits.
Join us as we watch them find their way – we defy you not to smile.
Summary: Also Known As: I let a cute boy call me someone else’s name for almost a year. Flashes for Round 9 of The Twilight 25. Maybe it will be like that collection of old photographs in a shoebox under your bed. Twilight, M, English, Romance & Adventure
