Welcome to our inaugural post here at The International House of FanFic.
We are both thrilled and honoured to be joined today by PlanetBlue who is going to share with us an elevator pitch of her new story, Badlands.
Badlands ~ Moonlight drives and sharpened knives. This is the story of us. WiP
First of all, I have to say congrats to FicSisters on the launching of this great site. A new place to find, recommend, and talk about fic. I’m completely honored to have my latest story, Badlands, featured in their first posting.
I’ve been trying to come up with a way to summarize Badlands for you, and it’s been a challenge. It’s the kind of story I believe that’s best told by the reader as they let it unfurl before them. I’ve had this idea hanging out in my head for a long time. It was a short story I wrote in high school and never showed anyone, a failed attempt to pull off this tale. I didn’t know then what I know now, that I needed Edward and Bella to bring it to life.
I know there are really no original ideas in fic anymore, everything has been done in one way or another, so I wouldn’t even attempt to say this is something completely different. I will say though, that if I don’t necessarily pull the rug out from under you, I am at least hoping to fold the corner over enough to make you trip.
Bella, a moody, unhappy girl with hate in her veins becomes intrigued by new student, Edward. He’s unsettling, coming off as gritty and angry, traits she sees in herself. For the first time in a long time, she’s got something in life that interests her. Here’s a peek at chapter two.
The rumor is, he killed his parents. Or stabbed one of them. Or something.
No one told me specifically since no one talks to me, but that’s what I heard Jessica Stanley tell Angela Weber in gym. I was up above them in the bleachers that pull out of the wall, watching the volleyball game my forged doctor’s note got me out of when I heard it over the echo of sneakers squeaking on the shiny wood floor.
“Oh yeah, he totally did. The guy’s a psychopath,” Jessica said, as she flipped her hair and leaned back on the bench behind her. I looked at her perfect, pink manicure laying on the wood in front of me and then at my own, the black polish I’d put on weeks ago clinging to life in the center of each nail.
“He didn’t kill them, he stabbed his father,” Angela chimed in. She looked around quickly before continuing, her voice lowering so as not to be overheard. “He’s just so creepy. Walking around with ratty old clothes all the time. I mean, can’t the guy afford a new shirt? He wore that stupid Sex Pistols one twice last week.” She shook her head in disgust, her black ponytail bouncing behind her. “His uncle is loaded, I mean, really.”
They continued on for a bit about his clothing before moving on to the more mundane facets of their life, neither being smart enough to question that if he actually had killed his folks, or even just attacked one, it’s highly doubtful he’d be attending our high school. I had laughed quietly at their idiocy, secretly wishing he had been somewhere lurking, listening, ready to pounce and perhaps show these two fuckwits some real violence.
Edward and Bella’s shared hate of the world around them is what pulls them together as they keep everyone else at bay. Yeah. Not much to go on, I apologize. For some reason, you’ve decided to trust me in the past; so hopefully, you’ll trust me again and join me for this ride.

Winter Song ~ Sometimes a Christmas miracle is nothing more than a second chance. Complete
I often read and enjoy fanfiction stories where the hand of fate brings Edward and Bella together, where the stars align quicker than you can say serendipity, where Cupid’s arrow is true and well-meaning friends meddle. You know the kind of story I mean; coincidences are rife. Edward and Bella are in the right place at the right time, and should one of them drop bread, it will always fall with the butter side up. Well, this is definitely not one of those stories and simply put, that is the beauty of it.
Edward and Bella live thousands of miles apart on opposite coasts of America. Both of them have worked hard to establish themselves in their careers and are highly successful in their chosen fields. Early on in the story, we find out that Edward and Bella were in a relationship in their undergrad years. It appears that Edward was the one to walk away, but it’s quite a while before we learn the details of their history. When they become reacquainted years later, neither chance nor luck plays a part in their reunion or rekindled relationship. Just as in their professional lives, their personal lives take hard work and effort. It’s up to them to know what they want and chase after it. And, in Edward’s case, this is meant in the literal sense too…
Everything around me stilled, and I realized this was one of those moments in life where you look back and realize you were at a crossroads. Something inside me was pushing me to go after her, but nothing about it made sense. I lived all the way across the country. We were both well established in our careers, and more importantly, she had given me no indication she was even remotely interested in me. But for whatever reason, all logic and rational thought seemed to disappear as I put one foot in front of the other and chased after her.
*Jessypt was highly amused at the “Run, Forest Edward, Run” response from readers.
I will say this for Edward, not only is he now a man who knows what he wants, he also knows how to show a girl a good time. How is this for a perfect date? Ice skating, hot chocolate with whipped cream and cinnamon on top, and the pièce de résistance – a kiss. (If “he knows how to show a girl a good time” made your mind jump to conclusions, let’s just say you would be right, but that comes later, much later. Can you say UST?) At this stage I was frantically ticking my Edward boxes. Romantic, thoughtful, sexy, sweet and attentive – all ticked.
Winter Song has a good plot but that is not why I enjoyed it so much; it was because of how it made me feel when I read it. Jessypt is one of those authors who possess the ability to reach out and pull you right into the story alongside her well-written characters. She could easily have waved a magic pen – given Edward and Bella an instant fairytale HEA. What she gave them was much better. She gave them opportunity and possibility. Edward and Bella get to live the reality of nurturing a beautiful relationship when long distance separated them, of fighting and forgiving, of sacrifice and reward. They did it all with maturity, joy and a sense of hope. They had a second chance at the forever kind of love, a chance to turn their dream future into a reality. Did they waste it or did they grab it with both hands and hold on for dear life? There’s only one sure way to find out – read Winter Song, which Jessypt wrote after she heard and fell in love with the beautiful Winter Song by Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson.
Two utterly delightful ladies, who in the past have wowed us with amazing stories, have wonderful news to share ~ J.R.Richardson aka Jo FictionFreak95, and Amy Vastine aka TroubleFollows1017.
We are very excited to be taking part in the Cover Reveal for J.R. Richardson’s Paranormal Mystery Romance, CURSED BE THE Wicked.
Cooper Shaw lives his life under a pen name and enjoys the anonymity it provides during his journeys across the globe as a seasoned writer for a travel magazine. When his job lands him in his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts to cover the famous Festival of the Dead, he soon realizes that he can’t stay invisible forever as he faces ghosts from a past he’s been trying to forget ever since he left.
The city holds nothing but bad memories for Coop until he meets a quirky young woman with an old soul and curious insights by the name of Finnley Pierce. While she acts as his tour guide through a town he thought he knew, Finn helps him unearth the truth of his childhood and might even begin to open up his heart.
By unraveling the mystery of his father’s murder, Coop may finally accept who he is, where he came from, and perhaps even realize what he wants for his future.
Release date: March 5, 2014
And recently released from Amy Vastine, her debut novel, The Weather Girl.
Summer Raines knows when it’s going to rain. She can just feel it. That’s why the local weather girl’s so good at her job. Too bad she couldn’t have foreseen the tumultuous arrival of Travis Lockwood, everybody’s favorite star NFL quarterback. Make that former star NFL quarterback. Sidelined back to Texas after an injury forced him out of his career, now the golden boy—shouldn’t he be humbled by his adversity, even a little?—is trying to steal her precious on-air time. Summer is reduced to reporting on the weather from…football games. It’s enough to make her quit and follow her dream of becoming a storm-chaser like her parents. Except she’s got to stay put; her grandparents need her. She’s stuck with a career that’s going nowhere and a man who delights in her refusal to be charmed. Falling in love isn’t nearly as easy as predicting the weather.
Best wishes from us to both of you ladies.
