Well hello again! We’re always thrilled-and taken by surprise-to see just whereabouts our readers are… *waves to world* we love to see you all dropping by, and hopefully finding a new favourite fic or author! This week we’re going to say hi to as many as possible in our sign off…we appreciate you all!
Huge FicSister smooches to the inimitable and scrummy FluffyLiz for starting us off…all the way from England!
I’m delighted to get the opportunity to revisit The Sound of Silence by Besotted – and in the title lies a clue to what this story is all about.
Edward is a 22 year old student at the University of South Florida, studying for degrees in both medicine and music before going on to medical school. He’s under pressure from his room-mate and best friend, Emmett, to date his girlfriend’s younger sister, but he’s just not sure. The decision is made easier for him when he helps out a girl trying to navigate her way through the door of a university building whilst overloaded with books, and he merely succeeds in knocking her on her derriere. Enter stage left one giant American native, who makes Edward feel stupid and useless when he starts communicating with said girl in sign language. Happily for Edward, she sees his chagrin and signs to him—which, of course, he doesn’t understand, but takes the time to learn, via Google, means ‘thank you’.
Their budding relationship is slow going and they don’t have a lot of time together, just 20 minutes or so 2 or 3 days a week before classes, but they quickly come to relish those times, communicating by signing, lip-reading and Bella’s iPad.
What I really liked about this fic is that, clearly, the author knows a lot about dealing with deafness, and there is a real air of authenticity to the story. Bella can lip-read, but only catches 60 or 70% of what is said, and the skill has been hard-won. As for Edward, learning sign language is no picnic, especially with his enormous study workload, so their early attempts to communicate are stilted and awkward. But for all that, they find common ground and can still make each other laugh. Bella is no shrinking violet, beset by shyness because of her disability—no, she’s confident and ambitious, determined to use education to help other hearing-impaired youngsters to reach their potential rather than be left by the wayside, like the majority of young adults similarly afflicted. I loved that this Bella is a strong, 3-dimensional character, who doesn’t take any crap, least of all from Edward.
If, like me, you consider sign language to be a beautiful and eloquent form of communication, and you enjoy literate and well-structured prose, then you should give this a try. The author doesn’t sugar-coat Bella’s condition, or shy away from the difficulties they both have to overcome, which makes it all the more satisfying to read.
Because she doesn’t speak, there is a key at the start of each chapter setting out the various means of communication Edward and Bella have at their disposal. It seems a little complicated at first, but you very quickly come to understand the very clear delineation between speech, signing and iPad conversations, which is very well thought out and cleverly done.
Summary: Bella Swan lives in a continuum between sound and silence, a world apart from what Edward Cullen knows. When their lives collide and their attraction can’t be denied, can they overlook their differences and let love define them? Rated M – Edward/Bella – Complete
It’s lovely to find a fellow fic-fan who has great taste and simply adores everything good about the fandom. It’s wonderful to find out about their reading life and loves. So we were delighted when our great pal, the enthusiastic and ever-supportive Pa Trizia agreed to share hers…
Pa Trizia, enquiring minds wish to know:
If you could have five minutes alone in a lift/elevator with any Edward, who would you pick? What would you
do say to him? 😉
I would pick artistic, intellectual Edward from Branching Inward by LifeInTheSnow. Because he gives the best ever first kiss and I would ask him to do just that again, as if it was the first time.. to ME this time, of course ;), although, five minutes might not be enough for that and talking in elevators is highly overrated anyway…
FicSister review of Branching Inward can be read here.
So, you are in possession of a time-turner. You can travel back to read any fic again as though it was your first time. What story would you pick and why?
There are so many I wished I still had to read for the first time, yet there are still so many I still haven’t read that hold the promise of such love evoking goodness. But I guess, I’d go with my first one, the one that made me fall in crazy love with fanfiction, Wide Awake by the madly talented AngstGoddess003. I wish she’d still be writing.
Of all the stories you’ve read, which one most made feel you were Bella – or made you want to be Bella?
There is a bit of me in so many Bellas. I suppose that is what makes reading all those great stories so addictive. You find yourself in many of her traits, her insecurities, her strengths and her hardships. We then always hope to get a piece of her happiness and her finding her mate, her true love, her unconditionally loving other half, too.
If I have to pick one, it could be one of TheFicChick’s Bellas, maybe How Bella Got Her Groove Back-Bella. It is so realistic and true and I found myself in that quite a bit. It’s a possible piece out of any longterm relationship scenario. And as usual, TheFicChick puts truths in the best words, adds a bit of humor and makes them recognizable.
And…err…if it’s not too personal a question, which fic scene would you most like to act out with Edward? Remember, you’re among friends here and we won’t judge.
From the top of my head The Blessing and the Curse by The Black Arrow comes to mind. The intensitiy and spirituality in which their long, slow, tortureous UST finally comes to be consumed on a higher level, is just unforgettable. There are probably many fics to give us the best, steamiest, most skilled experience, yet this one takes it up a nodge or two by adding all these long kept, hidden desires and finds fullfillment in such a satisfying way. The Black Arrow is capable of describing the elation and satisfaction in more than just a physical way. It’s perfect. Who wouldn’t want to have that experience acted out outside of a book?
We know you have impeccable taste, so please tell us a little about a WIP that makes you drop everything and rush to read.
Well, since I have reduced my WIP-reading exponentially to get back at reading multi chapters listed on my neverending tbr list, there are only very few I can actually talk about at the moment.
The usual writers I cannot skip WIPing with, are definitely pattyrose, at the moment with Age of Innocence, planetblue who is on pause right now, as well as LayAtHomeMom and as of right now it is MissWinkles‘ The Fall. I love this silently mysterious, brooding, manly Edward and struggling single mom Bella.
Katie aka MissWinkles keeps us on the edge and it’s so much fun to follow. Updates are somewhat regular and I don’t have to worry about getting my full length completed story in the end.
Her writing is captivating and her plot has me craving for so much more! If you’re not following yet, you might want to set that hook better sooner than later 😉
Pattyrose‘s Elevator Pitch for Age of Innocence can be read here.
FicSister review of The Fall can be read here.
Many of us are reticent to get drawn into angsty WiPs, fearing that we’ll be left hanging from week to week in a state of anxiety over our favorite characters. So when the delightful Hadley Hemingway posted that one of her faves, Compass54, had updated her current WiP Island Nights, it was tempting to take a look…but how to judge the angst level? Easy. Ask the author! Thankfully she rates it as minimal… *happy dance* and off to read. Holy moly, it was worth it!
So, what to expect? Hot, sexy island scenes with a charismatic and mysterious bartender? Well, yes. That’s kinda how it begins. But no. It’s so much more. So. Much. More. It’s easy to be captivated by the beautiful scenery, but actually it goes further, deeper, and travels beyond the fantasy setting. Literally. You’ll find yourself either reliving some vacation memories or adding new places to your bucket list!
Bella and Rosalie are saving for a major European trip, and working on a remote island for holidaymakers is the ideal way to make money without spending. When they arrive as the newbies, Edward is working the staff bar. Despite his beauty and magnetism, or maybe because of it, Bella knows he’s trouble. Actually, everyone knows he’s trouble. He’s the go-to guy for staff and tourists…and the behind-the-scenes activities will make you look on hotel staff in a whole new light. O_o
What begins as a story of a sweet girl avoiding the cute guy with the bad-boy rep, develops beyond expectations. It quickly becomes a tale of friendship and love with an underlying mystery. Seeing beyond the surface and finding the good guy beneath. Who exactly is Edward? Why does he need to trade in danger? Can people change? Well, like the rest of us WiP-hoors, you’ll have to dive in to find out!
Beautifully written, Island Nights is an engaging tale of doing the best one can, given the circumstances-and grabbing the chance to change, however it arises. Not to mention it’ll transport you to a whole new place.
Now all we need is the next update…*spoiler alert* I’m waiting for a towel to drop. *runs off to watch inbox*
Summary: I would always remember him as a dangerously beautiful twenty-two-year-old, a sensual and affectionate lover who could put a gun to a man’s head and pull the trigger. Why I couldn’t forget him was no mystery. I was still in love with him. Rated: M – Romance/Angst – Bella, Edward, Emmett, Rosalie – WiP
Nobody can tear your heart out quite like the lovely Livie79. She looks like an angel, but she writes like the devil. In the nicest possible way *winks*
Liv’s stories have long been my go-to stories if I want my heart torn out and stomped on. Aside from the angst, though, her stories are about deep, once-in-a-lifetime love and let’s be honest, that is why most of us are here, isn’t it? To read stories of everlasting love.
While I would be very hesitant to pick a favourite among Liv’s stories, the one that holds a special place in my heart is the one I read first, Practice to Deceive.
Edward in Practice to Deceive isn’t the nicest guy at first *cough* understatement *cough*. He sets out to win Bella over, just to steal her away from Jake. He has his reasons, but Bella is the innocent party in this tale of revenge. Needless to say his actions backfire on him spectacularly, and working his way to redemption isn’t an easy path.
From the prologue…
The moment I saw Bella my entire world came to a screeching halt. She was on her knees in the middle of my living room floor, sheets of paper fisted in her hands.
My eyes darted around the room, there were papers scattered everywhere, balled and ripped. My heart clenched when I spotted a well worn and very familiar book lying haphazardly on the floor.
I looked back to Bella, tears streamed down her face and dripped off her chin when she lifted her head and focused on me. All of the blood drained from my face as realization set in of what she’d found.
“Baby…” I whispered, slowly walking towards her.
“Don’t!” she screamed, jumping to her feet. “Don’t you fucking dare call me that; you don’t get to call me that again, ever.” She clenched her fists tightly, the papers crinkling in her hands as she stared down at them.
A sob tore from her throat and I wanted so badly to comfort her. She needed to know how sorry I was. She needed to know that I was in love with her. But when she lifted her eyes to mine the dead, lifeless glaze they held was like ice in my veins, freezing me in place.
“So I was revenge,” she said, the dead monotone pitch of her voice matching her eyes.
Angst-wise, Practice to Deceive is one of Liv’s tamer stories, but it still will take a toll on your tissue supply, but it is so worth it! If you want stories that will decimate your tissue supply, give Glass House and Watch Me Burn a whirl! *clutches at my heart just thinking about them* Liv’s current work-in-progress, Until We Bleed is set to make our hearts ache too. We love you, Liv!
Summary: I saw her today. I wasn’t impressed. But he wanted her, and that was enough for me. She was just collateral damage. Rated M – Angst/Romance – Edward/Bella – Complete
We’ve probably all read and enjoyed a testosterone-filled Boxingward or two, but in Going The Distance, the newest story from myonlyheroin, it’s Bella who dances nimbly around the ring. There’s no tripping up on flat surfaces for this Bella who excels at boxing and martial arts. She co-owns a boxing gym with a rather appealing Edward. Let’s hear from him…
I could hear the springs of the mat squeak and groan with every movement the fighters made. The moans of pain when a punch or kick had landed just right. My ears thundered with the applause from other fighters when one landed a submission hold, but nothing could tear my eyes away from the one fighter that owned me, even if she had yet to realize that.
She was beautiful in her concentration. The way her eyes stayed on her opponent, the scrunch of her eyebrows when she began to get frustrated. Even the way her hair would swing across her face when she went for a roundabout kick. Her grunts as she threw punches, and then finally, her cry of victory when she finally threw her sparring partner down and made him submit.
He’s her manager – and also the guy who’s secretly in love with her. Mmmm! It seems there will be more than one type of challenge ahead for us to enjoy. At only one chapter in and told in EPOV, this story is sure to be a knock out!
Summary: Fighting was all she’d ever known. She grew up watching her father box his way to the top. As she grew older, the call to the ring grew stronger. Soon, she’d be clawing her own way to the top, fighting off enemies. And I’ve been fighting my own battle. My love for her. AH – Rated: M – Drama/Romance – Bella & Edward – WIP
