Hello once again! Fics are blossoming in the fandom! Fully formed and blooming, and some newly emerging that need some TLC…
Thankfully we are surrounded by generous fandom pals ready with a sprinkling of love, who always accept our invitation to support and cherish! We can’t wait for you to see the delights in store for you this week…
I remember the first time I started reading Meg’s (Iambeagle‘s) stories. It was back in 2011, while she was posting First of the Month. I was blown away with how funny and natural her characters were, and went into complete stalker mode, staying up late to read her back-catalogue of fics.
There isn’t a funnier writer in the fandom to me than Meg. We clicked instantly, and not only am I lucky enough to call her one of my best friends in and outside of the fandom, I’m also lucky enough to be her beta and see what she’s working on before she surprises her readers (and sometimes me) with posting.
Which is exactly what happened with Anyone Else But You.
I woke up and saw the alert sitting in my inbox and was all, “That little punk!”
This is what four beers and an impatient nature will do to you, kids.
Anyone Else But You originally came about from a lot of begging from me for a contest I wanted Meg to enter. The same with A Heart Arcane. (Basically I’m going to bug her to enter contests she’ll never enter so we can get a WIP out of her.)
This story has everything I love about Meg’s writing. There is an abundance of humour and chemistry, and also that hint of angst, which Meg can do so, so well, even though she constantly thinks she can’t. (Don’t argue with me, Beagle, otherwise I’ll take away all of your hot sauce.)
The plot, in simple terms: Bella and Rose are best friends. Edward has been dating Rose for two months. Bella begins to take notice of her friend’s boyfriend, and vice versa.
It is all so delicious, that I can’t get enough. Like, even though you know cheating is wrong, especially considering it’s your friend’s boyfriend, you want this thing between them to happen. You get that gut-punch feeling when Rose kisses Edward in front of Bella. You feel butterflies when B and E stare that little bit too long to be innocent. You race ahead in your mind, to the potential fallout that you know is going to happen.
If you’re not reading Anyone Else But You yet (can we take a second to appreciate how perfect that title is?), you’re seriously missing out. I know everyone says this about a story they’re recommending, but I promise you. It is so good, and worth the twenty minutes it will take you to catch up on the story so far.
Kim (VampiresHaveLaws) xx
Summary: Bella’s clueless when it comes to men, especially her friend’s boyfriend. Humor/Romance – Rated: M – Bella & Edward – WIP
I think by now we all know that ThisIsReallyHappening is a storytelling genius in two areas: teenage angst and good old-fashioned, down home Southern tales. Breaker Baby, her newest fanfic gem, has plenty of teenage angst, and is set down in the South, but also a few surprises along the way (like an Edward who is actually past his teenage years).
Breaker Baby is set in the town of Forksdale. The bible is alive and well there, the community is small and close-knit, and the salt mines fuel the local economy. Justice Isabella Swan has lived there forever with her family. Her daddy is on the city council, her mama stays home and raises the children, and Justice spends her time with her best friends in the Ladies’ Circle (a group that she created). Everything starts to change when Edward “Breaker” Cullen is elected sheriff. Justice despises everything about him from the start, but it doesn’t take too long for the smooth-talking, sexy sheriff to start to crack her walls and worm his way into her inexperienced heart.
Happening has created a memorable cast of characters, from Rosie Kate with her endless stream of questions to Memaw and her wacked out predictions. Edward is completely sinful (as he always is in a Happening fic) and Bella is busy looking all over to find herself. The details of this story aren’t mine to give, but I will say that this story, though it seems like Happening’s traditional cup of tea, may be a little bit different than people expect. You’re going to have to read on to figure out exactly what I mean, but trust me when I say that our dear author is full of surprises.
What can I say without giving too much away? Prepare to relive the moment you found your first breathtaking love. The one that left your knees weak, your heart echoing off your rib cage, and your palms sweaty. Prepare for jade colored eyes, whisper soft kisses, and words that will make you swoon. Prepare for one sinful, Southern gentleman to woo a Forksdale belle with a rebellious streak in her. And prepare to expect the unexpected.
If you’re looking for a story that’s sure to invoke a strong emotional reaction, while making you swoon and read between the lines, then come on over and give Breaker Baby a read. I promise, you won’t be disappointed!
Summary: Mama said she wanted someone noble, upright, and godly for me. I just wanted him. Somewhere along the way, I found out what I wanted wasn’t always what I needed. Rated: M – Romance/Angst – Bella, Edward – Complete
I have an insatiable love of history, mysteries and music. One day while surfing the internet for a Bonnie and Clyde type of story, I came across a picture of the chain gang. Listening to The Devil’s Tattoo by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, I could hear them slaving away. Intrigued, I read the history and was horrified at how it came into existence. I read stories of innocent men railroaded into the system and wanted justice for them.
Thinking about the poor souls sent into those conditions with their prison nicknames brought me Preacher Man. Edward Masen, a priest with his life only beginning in service to the Church, convicted of a murder he didn’t commit.
He would need an ally in those harsh conditions, someone wise in the ways of human nature and smart enough to help him. Ace is his saviour. Jasper Grant, setup by a spiteful, jealous woman, knows what they’re in for and he does what he can to protect and guide Preacher Man.
I’ve always loved the idea of being able to disguise oneself and pictured Bella as Billy by day, a young ruffian who can fight and Tanya at night, a tempting songstress with men falling at her feet. The catalyst for her to take on these personas had to be caused by witnessing an event that would make her fear for her life.
The mystery evolves when Rose, a tenacious lawyer determined to free her client, Edward Masen, digs deeper. Emmett, a guard at the prison, inadvertently finds out the truth about Preacher Man. He does his best to protect both him and Ace.
The tide changes for Preacher Man and Ace when they are physically removed from the chain gang. As more connections are made, bonds are formed and the Whitlock/Masen Gang is born. Their purpose is to exact justice from those who wronged them by piecing together the mystery.
Judgment Day is a depiction of the journey each character takes and told from their individual points of view. It’s about survival under impossible circumstances, redemption, everlasting friendships and love. Lives are irrevocably changed by lies and cruelty. It’s a story of how those changes can either break you or make you a stronger person.
For me it’s been a labor of love with unbelievable support from Lilith, my pre-reader, and Ficfangirl, my beta, who helped make this story possible, and thank you to debzdezins for the wonderful banner.
Summary: Three innocent people, each surviving day by day until their lives intersect. One man accused of a crime he didn’t commit. A second man setup to save another. A young woman whose life is threatened, hiding from a killer on the loose. Connections are made. Bonds are formed. Each living with the hope to see their own Judgment Day. Canon pairing AH M for violence and adult content. Historical/Mystery/Drama – Complete
I am very excited to talk about a new AU story by new-to-me writer, Simaril. The Girl in the Meadow is described by Simaril as loosely influenced by Audrey Niffenegger’s book The Time Traveler’s Wife, and right from the start the reader is drawn into a tale of time travel where the characters are at play in the past and the future and in the middle. Confused? LOL. It is mysterious and mind-bending and awfully fun to read and obsess over.
It starts off with a bang in the prologue. You know something bad has happened and immediately start clicking for the next words. In fact, the story has what I like to call ‘high click factor’ and has more than once made me want to break my rule about PMing a writer to beg for an update. As you can see from the summary, when Bella and Edward finally meet in Forks (and this part of the story is mostly, bar some small deviations, in the Twilight canon), Bella knows about Edward and has many childhood memories of him, but he knows nothing of her and responds exactly as canon Edward did. Badly. The overarching question is how did this happen, why did it happen and what does it mean? Lots of theories spring to mind, but nothing that I want to put money on at this point.
Time travel as a plot vehicle is one of my favorite things to read. It lends itself to so many twists and turns. Will something you do in the future change what happens in the past? Can you fix a future problem by changing something in the past? Sort of twists your head up in interesting ways. I can’t wait to find out what happened and what will happen. I am literally waiting with the proverbial bated breath to see where this goes.
Please go read this immediately. I need more people to flail with. Send the writer some love and encouragement so that she will feed my need for more.
Summary: Bella arrives in Forks with a lifetime of memories of Edward and their time together. The only problem is that Edward hasn’t met her yet. Time travel, love and forever share in a story of longing and waiting for the right moment to start their forever. AU – Rated: M – Romance/Drama – WIP
Oh, course, leave it to Bornonhalloween to hit yet another out of the park! Her current story, Benched, does that and much more.
What started as a birthday drabble for our beloved shellshock81, who incidentally just happens to be part of the trio comprising Born’s Three Hot Potatoes (as well as frequent partner in Born’s crimes), has become a tale of bats and balls–tee-balls to be exact.
The story begins with sixth-grade math teaching, SMART Board-seeking, Edward Cullen, being thrust into something completely out of his league, coaching kindergarteners tee-ball. When a certain male assistant enters the game, Edward soon finds himself balls deep, pining and fawning over this new fella. As Coach Cullen contemplates the idea of this new someone invading his dugout, he scrambles to keep his composure. This new someone sending mixed signals– Major League Mariners pitcher, Emmett McCarty–certainly has no qualms about playing with Edward. Add headmistress Rosalie Hale’s affection for the burly major leaguer and we’re left wondering whether some switch-hitting will be taking place both on and off the field.
Of course Bornonhalloween infuses equal parts humor and hotness amid Edward’s bid to please Rosalie, but that proves quite difficult when so much UST seems to be encircling Edward’s little green field.
In the end, this fluffy, slash-y tale crafted with cute kiddie visuals leaves us all wondering who be will rounding the bases and sliding into home.
Summary: 6th-grade teacher Edward Cullen has done his homework on coaching tee-ball. His confidence evaporates when he takes the field for his team’s first practice and sees none other than Emmett McCarty, World Champion Mariners pitcher, on the sidelines. Can Edward manage his 5-year-olds, his fanboy crush, AND the arrogant asshole who insists on getting in his way at every turn? Humor – Rated: M – Edward/Emmett – Complete
When a rookie FBI agent on her first dangerous, undercover assignment is paired with a mercurial partner she realises she’s got a lot to learn…but nothing that can be found in any handbook. Thus ensuring On The Line, an intriguing and enthralling FBI story with an ingenious plot, has a fabulous dynamic between the two main characters.
Agent Isabella Swan, although naturally inexperienced in actual cases, is one smart and tough cookie. Upon discovering the details of her inaugural assignment, she understands many young lives are at stake, and is immediately prepared to risk everything – including putting her own life on the line.
Agent Masen, her older and seasoned partner, is an enigma for sure. Let’s take a look at the definition of that word:
- someone or something that is difficult to understand or explain
- an inscrutable or mysterious person
Check and check…it seems this dictionary explanation of ‘enigma’ could quite possible have been designed with Agent Masen in mind. Believe us, once you’ve read a couple of chapters, the desire to unravel his mystery will be every bit as strong as your interest in seeing these determined FBI agents work undercover to expose the culprits behind an appalling human-trafficking ring. You may also be rather appreciative of his unusual technique to desensitise Bella to his nekkidness! That, among other things, brings welcome moments of levity to an otherwise weighty story.
Note from NewTwilightFan: Questions and comments in the reviews for this story have made it clear to me that some disclaimers are in order. This is a crime/suspense story, not a romance. If you like smut, fluff or angst riddled romance, I have other stories that fit the bill. This isn’t it. There will be violence, both physical and sexual, but I plan to treat the victims of this story and the real world problems this fic is based on with the honesty, gravity and respect they deserve. With that said, please remember that this is still a work of fiction and I am NOT an expert on the FBI, law enforcement, international business, organized crime, sex trafficking, firearms or anything else for that matter. I’m just writing for fun and I think sharing it with you guys is both rewarding and entertaining. If this story isn’t for you, I completely understand. Thanks for stopping by!
Yes there will be some romantic underpinnings to the plot, but this is not a story I would categorize as a ‘romance’. I know there is no clear way to say it, so read at your own risk. But I really, really hope you decide to take that risk.
Well, despite…because of all the above the FicSisters are taking that risk. We dare you to join us on the line?
Summary: New Quantico graduate Agent Isabella Swan is assigned to go under cover with a partner she’s never met. Their mission will require every ounce of their skill, cunning, and discipline. . . then it will demand more. Agent Swan is totally green. Agent Masen is an enigma. Trust will be the least of their challenges when they discover how much is really on the line. Crime/Suspense – Rated: M – WIP
It is a great thrill to share a little bit about my recently completed story, Volturi Bed & Breakfast, with the FicSisters. I had the idea for a simple, low-angst romance over two years ago. Following the old adage of writing about what you know, I set the story of the small town Forks, Vermont, a composite of a few places I’ve lived. One of my favorite scenes is when the gang goes to the sugar house, which I named after the best place to get syrup in Vermont (IMHO).
I wanted to stay true to the spirit of Meyer’s plot and characters, but also have a little fun with them and drop a few puns and vampire jokes in my all-human fic. So, while the slightly older, extremely sweet, and sometimes jealous Edward is to me about as perfect as a man can be, Bella can be immature and selfish. I liked playing with the idea of her being ahead of her age when it came to establishing her home and career, but still being very behind in terms of understanding herself and the opposite sex. This gave her room to grow, and I surrounded her with the kind of people I wish I’d had to lean on in my twenties.
I started with a chapter-by-chapter outline, alternating between only Bella and Edward’s POV. However, my secondary characters of their BFF’s Alice and Jasper occasionally stole the spotlight. Using Jasper’s voice for one chapter gave me a chance to tap my experience of growing up in professional kitchens. My mom even hopped on the fanfic train and I was surprised to hear from her that one of her most memorable coworkers from my childhood was named Jasper, so I guess he was meant to be part of my story.
While my goal was always to tell a sweet romance with some hot lemons, the story evolved into a journey of a woman finding herself as she navigates the adult world for the first time. Bella not only manages her new career as an Innkeeper, but discovers the importance of friendship, family, and letting go of the limiting definitions she’s given herself.
Speaking of friendship, I cannot state often or emphatically enough how much my fellow Vermonter Sunflower Fran encouraged and supported me throughout this story. Thanks to her and thanks for the FicSisters for all they do for us writers.
Summary: Bella Swan makes the only logical decision when her father dies a year before she graduates from college. She buys a Vermont Bed and Breakfast with the unexpected inheritance. Edward is a native Vermonter who thinks he knows everything about the kind of person who moves into his State. Eventual lemons – minimal angst. Lots of Vermont-made, syrupy sweetness. Romance – Rated: M – Bella & Edward – Complete
Hello out there. I’m here to do something I haven’t done before: recommend a brand new story and a new writer to me. I stumbled across Something Beautiful Remains by Bethesda Gray the other day. Of course, and very predictably, I ran for the hills, because I am a total angst wuss. But after peeking in, peeking out and acting like a total loon, I put on the big girl panties and read the first chapter. Oh my dears, so painful and so beautiful. Bethesda Gray has taken an excruciating event and treated it with subtlety and sensitivity, and while it remains exquisitely painful, it pulls you in and makes you want to know more about this young woman who has suffered unthinkable loss. And make no mistake; this Bella is reeling. What fascinates me, as well, is that this is an AU Vamp story. I can’t wait to see how the writer takes this story from the depths of despair into the AU world of Cullen vampires.
There are only two chapters up so far and both are excellent and have me chomping at the bit for more. Please go read. Yes, even you angst wusses like me. We can all hold hands and pass the tissues. Or the wine. Show her some love and encouragement and maybe we’ll get the next chapter sooner.
Summary: After terrible loss, Bella returns to Forks to tie up loose ends. What she finds, though, is a new beginning she never could have imagined. Rated: M – Romance/Angst – Vampire AU – Edward & Bella – WIP
